Magnesium hydroxide decomposes at about 330 °C, absorbing heat and releasing water vapor, which cools the polymer and dilutes the flame; the magnesium oxide residue reduces smoke. Its higher decomposition temperature than ATH lets it be compounded into polypropylene, polyamides and other polymers processed above 200 °C.
As a high-loading filler, tamanho da partícula, purity and surface treatment decide melt flow and mechanical properties.
