Introduction:

N, N'-Dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC), also known as N, N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, or dicyclohexylurea, is a commonly used dehydrating agent. 

It is a water-soluble white solid which is stable under acidic or basic conditions. It is used as a reagent to provide active esters of carboxylic acids. N, N'-Dicyclohexylcarbodiimide is an organic compound that functions as an acid-activated carbodiimide.

This carbodiimide is prepared by reacting hexamethylenetetramine with chloroacetonitrile or by reacting hexamethylenetetramine with dicyclohexyl urea.It is also produced by reacting cyclohexanone with two equivalents of carbonyldiimidazole.

The reaction's products are hydrogen gas and N,N'-dicyclohexylurea. After this initial reaction, the resulting products undergo further reactions to produce dicyclohexylurea and cyclohexanone.

Applications:

N, N'-Dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) is a versatile reagent that is useful for a variety of different applications. It can use it to react with amines to produce carbamates, which help prepare several essential drugs.

It is used in peptide synthesis to activate carboxyl groups of amino acids. Since activated esters are highly reactive, they are used in the following sequence of peptide synthesis.

Apart from its use in peptide synthesis, DCC is used in the cross-linking of epoxy resins. It is widely used as a coupling agent to synthesize amides, esters, anhydrides, and other activated carboxylic acid derivatives.

DCC is also used to synthesize certain antibiotics, therapeutic agents, anti-cancer agents, anti-infective agents, pesticides, biocides, agriculture chemicals, herbicides, fungicides, polymers, dyestuffs, pigments, lacquers.
