SMCA

Sodium Chloroacetate (SMCA) Supplier from China

Sodium chloroacetate (SMCA, sodium monochloroacetate) is the pre-neutralized form of MCA, used where a process needs the chloroacetate group without adding caustic first — betaine surfactants, CMC and carboxymethylated intermediates. SUNCHEM supplies SMCA in 25 kg bags with a batch COA on every shipment.

Product overview & key benefits

SMCA carries the same reactive –CH₂Cl group as monochloroacetic acid, already neutralized as the sodium salt. Charging the salt avoids the heat and extra water of neutralizing MCA in the reactor, which is why it is the usual feed for cocamidopropyl betaine and other amphoteric surfactants, and an option for CMC and carboxymethyl starch.

Buyers usually check assay, moisture, sodium chloride and the pH of a solution: together they decide the salt load and the residual chloroacetate in the finished product.

No neutralization step

The salt goes straight into the reaction, so you skip dosing caustic into MCA and handling the heat it releases.

Standard feed for betaines

Quaternizing fatty amidoamines and tertiary amines with SMCA is the established route to cocamidopropyl betaine and lauryl betaine.

Quoted against your limits

Send your incoming-inspection sheet — assay, moisture, NaCl, pH — and we quote against it, with a batch COA for every lot.

Applications by Industry

Where SMCA is used, and what to confirm before you switch supply.

Betaine & amphoteric surfactants

Reacted with fatty amidoamines such as cocamidopropyl dimethylamine, or with alkyl dimethylamines, to make cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), lauryl betaine and related amphoterics for shampoos, body wash and detergents.

CMC & carboxymethyl starch

Used as the etherifying agent for carboxymethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl starch where the plant doses the sodium salt instead of MCA.

Check before trial

  • Degree of substitution target
  • Salt and by-product limits in the finished ether
  • Bag size that suits your charging system

Packaging & storage

Packaging

25 kg bags. Tell us your pallet pattern and labeling requirements with the order.

Storage

Keep bags closed in a cool, dry place; SMCA takes up moisture. Store away from strong acids and oxidizers and follow the SDS for handling.

Transport

Classified as toxic for transport (UN 2659, Class 6.1, PG III); it ships with dangerous-goods documents.

01

Name the downstream product

Betaine, CMC or an intermediate: each sets different limits for assay, moisture and chloride. Tell us which one and the grade you make.

02

Compare the numbers that matter

Put assay, moisture, NaCl and solution pH on the same COA template as your incoming inspection, so offers are compared like for like.

03

Plan for dangerous goods

SMCA ships as UN 2659, Class 6.1. Agree packaging, labeling and the destination port early so the booking does not delay the first order.

04

Trial, then lock the spec

Run a sample in your own process and keep the approved lot COA as the reference for contract limits.

Tell us your requirement. We match the grade.

Tell us what you make with SMCA, the quantity and the destination port. Add your current specification and we will quote against it.

Sodium Chloroacetate (SMCA) FAQ

What is sodium chloroacetate used for?

Mainly to make betaine surfactants such as cocamidopropyl betaine, and as the etherifying agent for CMC and carboxymethyl starch. It is also used in pesticide, pharmaceutical and dye-intermediate synthesis.

What is the difference between SMCA and MCA?

SMCA is the sodium salt of monochloroacetic acid. It supplies the same reactive group but is already neutralized, so you do not have to add caustic to MCA in the reactor.

How is SMCA packed and shipped?

In 25 kg bags. It is classified as toxic for transport (UN 2659, Class 6.1, PG III) and ships with dangerous-goods documents.

Can I get the TDS and a sample before ordering?

Yes. Send your application and planned test; we provide the TDS and SDS with the quotation and arrange a sample sized for your trial.
