Introduction:

Methylpyrrolidone,  known as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone or simply pyrrolidone, also known as NMP, is a chemical used to produce numerous products.

It is produced by the reaction between ammonia and methanol in the presence of a solid acid catalyst. The response also makes it of pyrolysis or dehydrochlorination of pyridine or other aliphatic amines. It is a colorless, clear, viscous liquid that dissolves in water and many organic solvents.

MP has attracted attention because of its unusual ability to lower surface tension in water; it is therefore used as a wetting agent. On its own, it can be harmful if consumed or inhaled.

Applications:

Methylpyrrolidone is an excellent solvent to dissolve many polymers, resins, grafting monomers, water-based dispersions, etc.

It is also used as a reactive diluent to enhance the reactivity of epoxy resins, urea-formaldehyde resins, methyl methacrylate, etc. It is also used as a dope carrier for many epoxy resins.

It has good volatility at moderate temperatures. It has excellent drying power. It is widely used in electronics, electric appliances, paint, fiber, plastics, etc.

It's classified as a viscosity control agent and used for emulsifying petrochemical feedstocks, solvents, crudes, and other substances.

It's used as a physical property modifier in enhanced oil recovery, too. It's often used as a personal care ingredient in hair care products and antiperspirants, shaving gels, aftershaves, nail care products, and other cosmetic items.
