Introduction:

Dicyclopentadiene(DCPD) is a cyclic compound. It has the systematic name 1,2-bis(cyclopentadienyl)ethene.

DCPD can be produced through the HOSCHER-MORSE reaction and the WOLF-KUSHNER reduction. During the production process, two organic compounds react to produce a high viscosity and good solvent properties at a low cost.

The main component of DCPD is dicyclopentadiene. It is a colourless liquid with a mild, pleasant odour. It is slightly soluble in water and miscible with alcohol, ether, and chloroform.

It degrades into cyclopentadiene (CPD) when exposed to air. Dicyclopentadiene(DCPD) is used in organic synthesis as an axial ligand for rhodium, palladium, and iridium catalysts for olefin polymerization. The compound is used as an intermediate to other products, notably neoprene.

Applications:

Dicyclopentadiene(DCPD) is mainly used as a monomer for the production of synthetic rubber.

It is also used to make other chemicals, such as dicyclopentadiene acrylonitrile (DCPDAN), dicyclopentadiene styrene (DCS) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). DCPD is mainly used in the production of synthetic rubbers, polyamides, and plastics.

It has commercial applications in the production of vulcanized rubber, polyester resins, unsaturated polyesters, flame retardants, antiknock agents for gasoline, rubber substitutes for tires and other products.

It is also used as a component in adhesives, binders, and defoamers. It is used as a substrate for the deposition of thin films. It is also used as a gas in fire extinguishers.
