SEH is the sodium salt of 2-ethylhexanoic acid. In pharmaceutical manufacturing it is dissolved in an organic solvent and used to exchange sodium onto an acid API, such as a β-lactam antibiotic; the sodium salt crystallizes while 2-ethylhexanoic acid stays in solution. It is also used to make calcium, magnesium and other metal octoates for paint driers and polymer stabilizers, and in lubricant and fuel additives.
Pharmaceutical users usually check assay, agua, free acid or alkali and heavy metals; for industrial uses, assay and water are normally enough.
