Trioxane is a white crystalline solid that releases formaldehyde when acids open its ring. Ring-opening copolymerization of trioxane with a small amount of a cyclic comonomer such as 1,3-dioxolane gives POM copolymer, the engineering plastic used for gears, clips and precision parts. In synthesis it is used where anhydrous formaldehyde is needed, and it is also used in disinfectant formulations.
For POM producers, pureza, agua, formic acid and methanol are the critical limits, because these impurities stop chain growth.
