Introduction:

Tert-butylphenyl Diphenyl Phosphate (BPDP) is a synthetic liquid organic phosphate ester flame retardant for plastics. 

It is a liquid in its natural form but is sometimes used in a white powder form.  It is extremely flammable and can be explosive when exposed to oxygen. In the liquid form, it is used as a flame retardant in plastics and fabrics.

In its powder form, it is used in various products, including plastics, fabrics,  semiconductors, and liquid crystal displays. 

It is also used in various applications ranging from furniture to carpets, screens, and even children's toys.  BPDP is damaging to the liver, kidneys, and skin.  It is also associated with negative effects on the nervous system.  

Applications:

Tert-butylphenyl Diphenyl Phosphate (BPDP) is used in residential, industrial, agricultural, or recreational areas. The use in residential applications is in the form of a replacement for the widely used DDT.

It is also used in industrial applications in everything from wire insulation to flame retardants.

As a flame retardant and is used in the fabrication of Polyester and Polyurethane; it is also used as a plasticizer and coupling agent and as a rubber additive and as a dough conditioner and as a lubricant and as an emulsifier and as a polymerization inhibitor, and as a mordant and as a plasticizer and as a mold release agent.
