It is used as a building block and phase transfer catalyst in the manufacture of dyestuff intermediates.

It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of isobutyrlchloroethyl isobutyrate, a raw material for the production of rubber toughening agents and the synthesis of ethylene dibromide as raw materials of organic intermediates.

It has been used as a dyestuff intermediate to produce azo dyes, benzamide, and isothiazolinone dyes.
