Introduction:

Tribromophenol (TBP) is a phenol derivative and a skin allergen. TBP is also known as tribromo phenol, bromophenol blue, and phenol blue.

It is a yellow crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water and is miscible with ketones and ethers. It is used as a stain and dye for various lab procedures.

Some commonly used colors are safranin, crystal violet, malachite green, methyl green, brilliant green, auramine, chlorazol black, methyl violet, gentian violet, etc. Tribromophenol is also used as a Merthiolate replacement in the dye decolorization test.

TBP is used as a substrate for oxidase enzymes. It also acts as a stain in the histochemical process of chromogen for gold colloidal staining.

Applications:

Tribromophenol(TBP) is used to manufacture plastics, paints, pigments, fibers, nylon, vinyl, flame retardant textiles, medical devices, weighing agents, and other products.

Commonly, it is used to produce epoxy resin compounds. These compounds could be used to form thermosets, adhesives, elastomers, and other polymers.

Another well-known use of it is the production of flame retardant compounds. It has been used as a precursor for heterocyclic compounds such as bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium.

In addition, it has been used as a dye and as a developer for microphotography to increase contrast and depth of field, among other things.
