It is derived from benzidine and ammonia.

It is a diamine, meaning that it has two amino groups (-NH2) bonded to a central carbon atom.. it is a colorless solid.

This compound is soluble in water and alcohol. It has been used as a pharmaceutical intermediate and as a building block for synthesizing other compounds, such as the drug Riluzole.
