Introduction:

Glycine is a colorless, sweet-tasting crystalline amino acid and proteinogenic amino acid.

As the simplest of the 20 amino acids commonly found in proteins, it has been studied since ancient times. Its name is an abbreviation of "glycine," which was also its original chemical name. It is a non-essential amino acid belonging to the proteinogenic amino acids.

It is a colorless crystalline solid widely distributed in nature and is a component of all living organisms.

It is found in muscle tissues and is involved in various reactions of the human body. It contains an asymmetrical carbon atom, which means it can exist as two different stereoisomers (also called optical isomers), L-glycine and D-glycine. It is one of the proteins that make up collagen and is similar to other amino acids, such as L-serine and L-threonine.

Applications:

Glycine is a critical element of the glycinergic system, which is part of the larger glutamatergic system. It is a chemical constituent of proteins and thus important for human nutrition.

It is also the precursor to creatine. Glycine and glutamate activate and inhibit different receptors, and the two systems function together as a unit.  It is also an inhibitory neurotransmitter.

The human body can synthesize it from the amino acid serine. Glycine acts as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system to inhibit the release of the neurotransmitters such as GABA and glutamate and activate the GABA receptors.

It is also the precursor to creatine, a derivative important for energy transfer in muscles and other tissues.
