Introduction:

Diphenyl guanidine is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Diphenyl guanidine or DG is a chemical compound that has two benzene rings and two amino groups.

It is used in organic synthesis and pharmaceuticals. Diphenyl guanidine is a reactive intermediate in some organic synthesis reactions. This white crystalline solid is soluble in organic solvents.

It dissolves in non-polar solvents such as benzene but not polar solvents like water. It is produced by reacting phenol with formaldehyde followed by cyclization with an acid catalyst.

The compound is classified as an imine or organic compound with a carbonyl group bonded to two primary amine groups. It plays an important role in the synthesis of Diphenylguanidine terephthalate (DPG-T).

Applications:

Diphenyl guanidine is used as a reagent in some organic reactions, e.g., converting ketones to diazo compounds, which are useful in producing dyes, rubber accelerators, and so on.

It is also used as a reagent in the synthesis of some heterocyclic compounds. It is used as an insecticide against aphids, cutworms, mites, leafminers, fungus gnats, thrips, and whitefly.

It is also used as a herbicide against broadleaf weeds. It is also used as a disinfectant for grain elevators. It is widely used in the manufacture of polyurethane resins, epoxy resins, and pharmaceuticals.

It is mainly an intermediate for the synthesis of other drugs. It has also been used as an anti-fungal agent.
