Introduction:

Dibenzothiazole disulfide, also called DBT, is a dibenzodioxin that is a heterocyclic compound and dioxin. It is a pale yellow crystalline solid and is the thioether of dibenzo-1,3-oxathiolane.

It is a toxic and flammable compound that may cause cancer and irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. It has an odor of roasted coffee and garlic.

It can be formed from the reaction of sodium sulfide and carbon disulfide. It is produced by the chemical reaction of benzene and thiobenzophenone. It is also produced by reacting thioacetamide with formaldehyde sulfur dioxide.

The product also contains two equivalents of sulfide per disulfide group.

Applications:

Dibenzothiazole disulfide is used in polyurethanes to improve resistance to heat, sunlight, and ozone.

Due to the aromatic disulfide functional groups, it has excellent thermal stability. It is used as a source of sulfur, for vulcanization of rubber, as a mordant, and as a photographic fixer.

It is a starting material in the preparation of dyes and rubber accelerators. It is an intermediate in the production of the drug pentothal, a potent vesicant used topically in the treatment of warts and corns.

It is an ingredient in shaving creams as a foam stabilizer. It is used as an intermediate in producing dyes, optical brighteners, flame retardants, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, semiconductors.
