Product Overview

HALS 144 (bis(1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidyl) [[3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]methyl]butylmalonate) combines a hindered amine and a hindered phenol, so it protects against both UV and thermal oxidation. As a solid it suits powder coatings and is also used in automotive coatings and selected plastics.

Typical specification. Every shipment is supplied with a batch COA; the limits that apply to your order are confirmed in the quotation and contract.

Technical & Buying Information

Selecting a Light Stabilizer

Your requirementWhat usually works
Thick PP and PE partsLow-MW HALS (770) for fast migration to the surface
Thin films, tapes and fibersPolymeric HALS (944, 622) for low volatility and extraction resistance
Agricultural film exposed to pesticidesPolymeric HALS with good resistance to acidic residues; ask about the specific chemicals
Automotive and industrial coatingsLiquid HALS (292) with a UV absorber
Acid-catalyzed coatingsNon-basic NOR-type HALS (123)
Long outdoor lifeHALS plus UV absorber, often a blend of a low-MW and a polymeric HALS

Light Stabilizer 144 Buyer Guide

Define the exposure

Note the climate, the expected service life and your weathering test (xenon or QUV hours, retained elongation, gloss or ΔE). For agricultural film, list the pesticides and fumigants the film will meet.

Pick molecular weight for the part

Low-MW HALS move to the surface quickly and suit thick parts; polymeric HALS resist loss from thin films and fibers. Many outdoor packages blend both.

Check interactions

HALS are basic and can interact with acidic additives, halogenated flame retardants, some pigments and sulfur-containing antioxidants. Send your full formulation so we can flag conflicts before the trial.

Lock in supply terms

Agree physical form (powder or granule), packaging, monthly volume and documents up front. A matching CAS number alone does not qualify a new source; run your weathering test and keep the approved lot COA as the reference.

Light Stabilizer 144 FAQ

Why choose 144 for powder coatings?

It is a solid, so it suits powder formulations, and its built-in phenolic adds heat stability during baking.

What dosage is typical?

0.5–2% on binder with a UV absorber.

Does it replace a separate antioxidant?

It contributes antioxidant action, but some systems still use a separate antioxidant. Send your formulation for advice.

Can I get a sample before ordering?

Yes. Tell us the polymer, the test you plan to run and the quantity you need. Samples ship with a COA so you can compare the lot against your current material.

What if a COA does not match our agreed specification?

Send us the agreed specification and the COA showing the difference (parameter, unit and test method). We check it with the production batch record before you accept the material, and replace or re-test where the lot is out of specification.
