What Is HALS 770?

HALS 770 is a low-molecular-weight, N-H (basic) hindered amine light stabilizer. It helps slow photo-oxidative degradation in polymers by interrupting radical reactions that can otherwise lead to loss of mechanical properties, discoloration and surface deterioration during light exposure.

Unlike additives that are consumed in a single reaction, HALS can participate in a regenerative stabilization cycle. This makes HALS 770 useful when formulators need long-term polymer light stability, subject to compatibility with the resin, pigments, fillers and the complete additive package.

How HALS 770 Works

HALS 770 does not mainly protect a polymer by absorbing ultraviolet radiation. Instead, it helps trap radical species formed during photo-oxidation and supports a regenerative stabilization mechanism that slows the degradation cycle.

A UV absorber works earlier in the pathway by absorbing damaging UV energy and converting it into less harmful energy. Because the mechanisms differ, a HALS and a UV absorber may be complementary in a formulation.

Typical Applications

Polypropylene (PP)

Selected molded, fiber and compound applications requiring light-stability evaluation.

Polyethylene (PE)

Selected films, molded articles and outdoor polyolefin applications.

Engineering Plastics

Selected resin systems where processing and compatibility requirements are suitable.

Plastic Compounds

Compounds and additive packages developed for weathering and light exposure.

Outdoor Polymer Products

Articles requiring retention of appearance and mechanical performance during light exposure.

Suitability depends on polymer type, article thickness, pigments, fillers, acidic components, processing conditions, exposure environment and the complete stabilizer package. Final selection should be validated in the customer’s formulation.

HALS 770 vs Polymeric HALS

What is the main structural difference?

HALS 770 is a low-molecular-weight HALS. Polymeric or oligomeric HALS, such as HALS 944, have substantially higher molecular size.

How can molecular size affect performance?

Lower-molecular-weight HALS may offer efficient distribution in suitable systems, while polymeric HALS are commonly considered where lower migration, lower volatility or better extraction resistance is important.

Is one grade always better?

No. Performance depends on resin compatibility, processing temperature, article thickness, exposure, contact with water or chemicals, and interactions with other formulation components.

How should a buyer choose?

Compare the target polymer, service-life requirement, migration or extraction risk, processing conditions and the complete additive package, then confirm performance through application testing.

HALS 770 is not a universal replacement for polymeric HALS, and polymeric HALS are not automatically superior in every formulation. The suitable option should be selected and validated for the specific application.

Can HALS 770 Be Used with UV Absorbers?

Yes. HALS 770 may be combined with a UV absorber because the two additive classes act through different mechanisms. A UV absorber reduces the amount of harmful UV energy reaching the polymer, while HALS 770 helps interrupt photo-oxidative radical reactions.

The appropriate combination and use level depend on the polymer, thickness, pigment system, exposure conditions and performance target. SUNCHEM does not publish a fixed ratio; formulation trials and weathering validation are required. See UV Absorber 326 as a related product reference.

HALS 770 FAQ

What is HALS 770 used for?

HALS 770 is used to help slow photo-oxidative degradation and improve light stability in suitable polymer formulations.

Is HALS 770 a UV absorber?

No. HALS 770 mainly acts through radical trapping and a regenerative stabilization mechanism rather than by directly absorbing UV radiation.

What is the CAS number of HALS 770?

The CAS number is 52829-07-9.

What polymers can use HALS 770?

Typical evaluation areas include PP, PE, polyolefins, selected engineering plastics, plastic compounds and outdoor polymer products. Suitability must be confirmed in the final formulation.

What is the difference between HALS 770 and HALS 944?

HALS 770 is a low-molecular-weight HALS, while HALS 944 is an oligomeric or polymeric HALS. Molecular size can affect migration, extraction resistance, volatility and application fit.

Can HALS 770 be combined with a UV absorber?

Yes, the mechanisms can be complementary, but there is no universal ratio. The combination should be optimized and tested for the target polymer and exposure conditions.
