Introduction:

Cocamidopropyl Betaine(CAPB), commonly just called coco betaine, is a light yellow transparent liquid. It is an amphoteric surfactant. This means that it can have either a positive or negative charge depending on the solution's pH.

It is composed of fatty acid (coconut fatty acid), ammonia, and betaine (a derivative of hydroxyethyl betaine). Cocamidopropyl Betaine is made from coconut oil and the amine group. It has a high yield, even up to 90%.

The compound has anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties that can prevent mildew, mold, mites, and fungi on your skin or hair. It has excellent solubility, and it has low irritation to natural leather.

Applications:

Cocamidopropyl Betaine(CAPB) contributes to better foaming, emulsifying, and cleaning capabilities of shampoos and soaps. In cosmetics, it is used to provide cleansing, emulsifying, and foaming properties.

In personal care products, CAPB is used as a defoaming agent, an anti-static agent, a foam booster, and a low-persistence foam. CAPB is a good solubilizer and can be used as a co-surfactant for products containing other surfactants.

It also helps to solubilize oil in aqueous solutions. Because it is amphoteric, CAPB can react as a base or as an acid under certain conditions. It can respond as a base, for example, in the presence of divalent metal ions.

In aluminum dioxide, CAPB can turn into a weak cationic surfactant that can solubilize hydrophobic substances. This can be used as a co-surfactant for other cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants.
