Introduction:

Lamivudine is an antiviral drug that prevents the multiplication of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) by interacting with its protease enzyme.

There are many different trade names available for this medication such as Epivir-HBV and Sidene. The main ingredients in the manufacturing process include D-ribose, L-leucine, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP), erythritol, citric acid monohydrate.

Once combined, these ingredients produce a chemical reaction involving acetic anhydride, ethanolamine (2) and azobis(4 nitrocyclohexane trimers).

This creates most of what we call Lamivudine's "active ingredient." Once it has been created, this active ingredient binds with that nucleic acid and prevents viral replication, which blocks entry into host cells.

Applications:

Lamivudine is often used in combination with other medications for the treatment of HIV infection.

It protects against HIV infection in people who do not have HIV .it can slow down recovery time from a first episode of the disease—also, used for the treatment and prevention of hepatitis B virus infection ("HBV") or inflammatory bowel disease ("IBD").

It is an active ingredient in both lamivudine based combination therapies used to treat HIV infection by suppressing the replication of HIV-1.

It is also used to treat chronic hepatitis B infections and prevent certain complications from worsening liver disease due to an inherited metabolic disorder known as X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia (XLA). This antibiotic works by interfering with viral replication, stopping further damage to cells in the infected person's body.
