Magnesium hydroxide decomposes at about 330 °С, absorbing heat and releasing water vapor, which cools the polymer and dilutes the flame; the magnesium oxide residue reduces smoke. Its higher decomposition temperature than ATH lets it be compounded into polypropylene, polyamides and other polymers processed above 200 °С.
