Introduction:

Polyquaternium-7 is a polymeric conditioning agent and film-forming polymer. It is made up of repeating units of vinylpyrrolidone (VP) and dimethylaminopropylmethacrylamide (DMAPMA).

It is used in hair conditioners to increase smoothness, gloss, and body. It functions by cationic association with the surface of damaged hair.

It is also an effective hair-conditioning agent which remains primarily on the hair after rinsing. It forms a coating film on the outer scales of the hair, protected from humidity and other chemical agents such as shampoos.

It is used in fabrics to provide a "no wrinkles, no static" finish. An oily coating on the fabric draws them into microscopic crevices by reducing the surface tension of water droplets viewed from above. It removes any contact between two pieces of material. The result is a lack of creases or wrinkle lines in the fabric because it cannot accumulate less-dense areas upon folding.

Applications:

Polyquaternium-7 or polyquat is a hair-conditioning polymer. It has many applications in the industry, notably in cosmetics and hair care products such as conditioners and styling agents.

This polymer can be used as a conditioner to protect the hair from breakage on exposure to acids such as peroxide that causes the damage of weakening the cuticle layer of the hair shaft due to its inhibiting effects of proteinases enzymes that digest keratin fibers. As it reduces friction caused by rough surfaces (e.g., of skin), this makes skin smoother and more pliable, making it possible for moisturizers to penetrate deeper into skin tissues.

It is used as a styling agent in hair conditioner, hair masks, and lotion. It's an excellent film former that provides all-day protection against humidity.

In fabrics, it helps resist the formation of static electricity. It is used in fabric finishes to produce garments that repel water and have wrinkle and soil resistance properties when dry or wet.
