Paraquat 42%TC is a non-selective herbicide used to kill unwanted plants. It was commonly used for agricultural purposes but has since been replaced by less environmentally harmful products. 

It and diquat function the same way, killing plants by causing oxidative stress. When exposed to air, it becomes pro-oxidant forming superoxide radicals that react with vital cellular components, like membranes and proteins.

It is a selective toxin but causes damage to humans and other animals if ingested. It's poisoning through ingestion results in severe irritation, vomiting, stomach pain and ulceration of mucous membranes.

Symptoms may also include swelling of the face, tightness in the throat and chest pain. Skin contact with it may result in redness, pain and inflammation of the skin. Acute poisoning by paraquat is frequently fatal if left untreated.


Paraquat 42%TC is an herbicide. It may be applied to control unwanted vegetation growing on cultivated land, industrial sites, railroads, and rights of way.

It has also been used as a defoliant to prepare crops such as tobacco for harvesting. It kills weeds and disrupts the plant cells of oxygen until they die.

It inhibits photosynthesis by sticking to the ribs on chloroplasts and respiratory systems, which starves the plant cells of oxygen until they die. It acts quickly on one application, usually only taking a few days.

It is applied at one ounce or less per acre, and it affects all plant cells except crop plants, so it can be used to destroy weeds but not crops.
