Introduction:

Lambda-cyhalothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid used for insect control. It belongs to the family of chemical compounds known as "pyrethroids." The product can be found in small packets, pellets, emulsions, dust, and wettable powders.

Chemical analysis shows that this product breaks down primarily by hydrolysis in soil and aerobic aquatic systems; biodegradation in anaerobic water; fast photolysis in the air; prolonged combustion at low temperatures (< 100 ˚C); less than 4% potential volatility (12 hours at RT); and 3% residual toxicity after application.

It is toxic to most mammals, except for humans. Lambda-cyhalothrin does not bind well in soil, but acid rain can leach them out fairly quickly. However, they are fairly unstable when exposed to an environment with little oxygen, making them unsuitable for use on soil prone to flooding or agricultural areas near water systems.

When combined with the wetting agent Tween 80, its active ingredient penetrates six inches into the soil to destroy termites and most other crawling insects through contact or ingestion. It is most commonly used in mosquito control, where it blocks nerve signals from reaching muscles (resulting in quenched muscle contractions) at the neuromuscular junction, altering species' ability to fly or walk.

Applications:

Lambda-Cyhalothrin is a powerful synthetic pyrethroid applied topically or in preventative perimeter residual treatments for residential and commercial sites.

Key applications include mosquito control and general insecticide treatment in agriculture, public health, residential and commercial sites. It is in ten per cent of all world crops, including wheat, corn, and sorghum.

This pesticide is produced when Cyhalothrin binds to atmospheric oxygen, which means death for twelve kinds of pests. Tropical crops are also the major application for lambda-cyhalothrin. These crops include coconuts, coffee, cocoa, cotton, pineapple and rubber. Controlled release pesticides are of special interest in this crop because they can provide long-lasting treatments to these tropical plants.

Applications of lambda-Cyhalothrin include pest control of light foliage trees such as Acer saccharinum (silver maple), Catalpa speciosa (Indian bean tree) and Prunus americana (chokecherry). It also allows treating ornamental plants and screens to kill aphids and leafhoppers.
