Introduction:

Cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide. It is also referred to as CPY, cythioate, cyflumetofen, and permethrin.  It acts as an agonist of the GABA receptors.

Therefore it affects the central nervous system of insects and leads to death by hyperstimulation: they become unable to move and eventually die from exhaustion.

It is not heat resistant, which means that it decomposes when heated and emits cyanide gas. This is dangerous. It is insoluble in water and soluble in many organic solvents.

It is produced by the reaction of dichloromethane chloride with α-cyano-m-phenoxybenzyl alcohol. It can also make it by reacting dichlorothrinyl chloride with sulfonate.

Applications:

Cypermethrin is an insecticide for crops, household, and garden use. It is a pyrethroid-based manufactured organic insecticide.

It is available in different forms like emulsifiable concentrate, wettable powder, emulsion concentrate, flowable concentrate, wettable granule, dry granule, etc. it has good residual activity against soil pests. It is effective against a wide range of insects, including those resistant to other synthetic pyrethroids.

It is mainly used to control aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, mealy bugs, caterpillars, thrips, fruit flies, sawflies, leafhoppers, termites, locusts, and leaf miners, scales, cutworms, planthopper (or plant lice), leaf-feeding caterpillars, etc.

It has low toxicity to mammals and birds. The material is also broadly used as a seed treatment.
