Introduction:

Isopropyl Myristate is a high viscosity, a hydrophobic liquid obtained by reacting myristic acid with an alcohol. Though it behaves like a solid, IPM is a liquid that belongs to the chemical class of esters.

It's composed of 40% IPA and 60% myristic acid. This chemical has an odor of rancid butter but can be masked with other fragrance oils. Isopropyl Myristate is colorless,  miscible in water and readily soluble in many organic solvents.

In the pure state, it will form high clouds of white smoke at room temperature.  The molecule can be analogous to stearin because each compound is composed of eight atoms of carbon surrounded by 18 hydrogen atoms and one atom of each oxygen, and various lengths between their double bonds vary.

Isopropyl Myristate causes reactions such as those exposed to strong alkalis due to its low octane number. The substance exists as a white wax at room temperature.

Applications:

Isopropyl Myristate (IPM) is at home in skincare products because it penetrates skin quite easily thanks to its excellent solvency power, cleansing ability, and affinity for other compounds found on the surface of your face or body.

It is also often used as an emollient in hair care and personal lubricant products. Its high molecular weight renders it incapable of penetrating the skin, making IPM safe for use on your body after a long day or during the month.

It has low to moderate-hazard properties with little to no significant chronic hazards associated with its use at this time. It is also used to make cholesterin-free soaps.

Commercial applications for this product may include solvents or lubricants, depending on the percentage of myristic acid that they contain.
