Introduction:

Bronopol is an organic compound consisting of bromine and nitrogen. It is white, light yellow, or yellow-brown crystalline powder at room temperature.

It is odorless and soluble in water and alcohol organic solvents but insoluble in other types of organic solvents.

It is toxic, irritating the eyes and skin, and harmful to the environment if used in large quantities. Bronopol can be made from nitromethane and formaldehyde.

It's also made by reacting 2-Bromo-2-nitropropane with sodium hydroxide under controlled conditions. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Because it has a bromine substituent, it may corrode certain metals in water, such as aluminum.

Applications:

Bronopol is an antibacterial agent used to treat UV-induced skin conditions. Bronopol is also used in combination with other agents in treating acne vulgaris to manage bacterial infections in HIV-positive patients.
