Introduction:

Acyclovir is a common antifungal drug for topical application. It is in a class of antiviral drugs called nucleoside analogs. It is a synthetic nucleoside analog of guanosine.

It is a white to light yellow crystalline powder. It is chemically stable but incompatible with potent oxidizing agents. It is produced by trimethylsilylating guanine, reacting with 2-benzyloxy ethoxy methyl chloride and then removing the benzyl group to obtain acyclovir.

The yield of this method is not very high. It is the main ingredient in the preparation of Zovirax. This medication contains acyclovir, a synthetic analog of penciclovir.

The active substance in this drug prevents viral DNA synthesis and suppresses the development of herpes virus infections in humans.

Applications:

Acyclovir is a medication used to treat herpes labialis infections. It is also indicated for cold sores around the mouth, caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1).

Acyclovir is one of the most common medicines used for the treatment of genital herpes. Acyclovir effectively treats the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which is responsible for causing genital herpes.

It is also helpful in treating chickenpox, cold sores, shingles, and genital herpes. Acyclovir can be used either by adults or children suffering from chickenpox, HSV infection, or shingles. It inhibits the replication of the herpes virus by selective inhibition of the viral thymidine kinase (TK) in infected cells.
