Introduction:

Atazanavir is a potent HIV protease inhibitor. It binds reversibly and selectively to the active site of HIV-1 aspartyl protease (HIV-1 PR), which is essential for viral replication.

It has been shown that atazanavir can inhibit replication of multi-drug resistant HIV strains in cell culture. It has a low impact on the lipid distribution of the patient, which is one of its properties.

It is not cross-resistant to other anti-HIV drugs. Its in vitro activity differs from non-peptide PIs such as nelfinavir, which was designed based on X-ray diffraction studies of enzyme-azapeptide complexes and had a C-2 symmetric chemical structure.

Applications:
