- CMP materials — slurries and pads for chemical-mechanical planarization.
- Photoresist-related materials — resists, ancillaries and intermediates, with capability concentrated at mature nodes.
- Wet electronic chemicals — acids, solvents and etchants where several producers have moved up the purity ladder.
- Specialty polymers — encapsulants, films and adhesive materials for packaging and PCB applications.
In each category, the meaningful question is not whether a Chinese supplier exists, but whether a specific product meets a specific grade, at consistent volume, with the documentation your qualification process needs.
Practical Sourcing Risks
Five risks come up repeatedly in real procurement:
- Grade availability. A producer may offer an industrial grade convincingly while its electronic grade is early-stage or limited in volume. Grade claims should be verified product-by-product, not assumed from a company profile.
- Batch-to-batch consistency. Purity on one COA is not the same as purity across a year of shipments. Ask about statistical process data, not just single-lot results.
- IP sensitivity. Formulated products such as slurries and resists carry more IP risk than commodity chemicals. Clarify formulation ownership and confidentiality terms early.
- Export controls. Some materials, precursors and equipment-related products are subject to Chinese export controls or destination-country restrictions. Requirements depend on product, destination and end use, and the correct approach is always to identify and comply with them early rather than discover them at booking.
- Qualification cycles. Semiconductor and electronics customers typically require months of qualification. Switching suppliers is a project, not a purchase order — plan volumes and timelines accordingly.
How Buyers Should Validate Suppliers
A practical validation sequence looks like this: confirm the product-specific grade and specification sheet; obtain recent COAs and, where possible, consistency data across multiple lots; run a paid sample or trial-lot evaluation under your own test conditions; audit or at least video-review the production site; and confirm documentation capability — SDS quality, REACH or destination-specific compliance information, and export procedures. References from existing electronics customers, where they can be shared, are worth more than certifications alone.
