It has a spicy, burning, irritating odor. It is used as a chemical intermediate.

It is a reagent for the preparation of bromoform and 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane. It has been used as a solvent for organic synthesis.

It is also used as a solvent for electrolytic chromium plating. It is used as a flame-retardant antifreeze, solvent, and plasticizer. It is also used as a general anesthetic for fish and as a firefighting liquid.

Applications:

In industry, Tetrabromoethane is used as a substitute for ozone-depleting CFCs and as a fire-fighting inducer.

It is used as a solvent for hydrophobic coatings for aircraft and as a flame retardant. It is a component of a flame retardant used in electrical wiring systems. It is used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate.

It is used to produce lubricants, paints, adhesives, waxes, solvents, refrigerants, cosmetics, insecticides, rubber, pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals. It is also used in the manufacturing of electronic devices.
