TBAB carries anions from a water phase into an organic phase, so it speeds up alkylations, substitutions, oxidations and other two-phase reactions under mild conditions — the classic phase-transfer catalyst in pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis. It is also used as an ion-pair reagent in chromatography, as an electrolyte, and as an intermediate for other tetrabutylammonium salts.
