SEH is the sodium salt of 2-ethylhexanoic acid. In pharmaceutical manufacturing it is dissolved in an organic solvent and used to exchange sodium onto an acid API, such as a β-lactam antibiotic; the sodium salt crystallizes while 2-ethylhexanoic acid stays in solution. It is also used to make calcium, magnesium and other metal octoates for paint driers and polymer stabilizers, and in lubricant and fuel additives.
