Introduction:

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is an anionic cellulose ether. It is a white or slightly yellow flocculent fiber powder or white powder.

It is odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, easily soluble in cold or hot water, forming a transparent solution with a certain viscosity. Its solution is neutral or slightly alkaline, insoluble in ethanol, ether, isopropanol, acetone and other organic solvents, soluble in ethanol or acetone solution containing 60% water.

It has good hygroscopicity. Cellulose derivatives from carboxymethyl substituents are formed by treating cellulose with sodium hydroxide to form alkali cellulose, which reacts with monochloroacetic acid to produce CMC.

The glucose unit that constitutes cellulose has three hydroxyl groups that it can replace to obtain products with different degrees of replacement.

Applications:

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is the largest, most versatile and convenient product in the cellulose ether category. It is used in oil and gas drilling and well-digging projects.

The textile industry uses CMC as a sizing agent for cotton, silk and wool, chemical fibers, blends and other strong materials such as light yarn sizing. It is used in the ceramic industry as adhesives, plasticizers, suspending agents of glaze and color fixing agents of the blank.

The pharmaceutical industry uses CMC with appropriate viscosity as binder and disintegrant for tablets and suspension aid for suspensions.

In addition, it is also used in the food industry, construction and paper industries.
