Introduction:

Imipenem is a beta-lactam antibiotic and an important medicine used to combat bacterial infections.  Imipenem is either a clear or light yellow solution with no odor.

This drug belongs to the carbapenems, and it has a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against many Gram-negative bacteria, including Enterobacteriaceae such as Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Imipenem also possesses some activity against gram-positive organisms like Streptococcus pneumoniae and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Imipenem is either a clear or light yellow solution with no odor. The antibiotics' nickname, penems, comes from the medical names for this product, but it might also be called: Imi's Pills or Penicillin in pill form.

Imipenem is a strong antibacterial drug that delivers results even in the case of resistant cells. Imipenem goes far beyond what you could accomplish with penicillin to combat bacteria and can be used as a last resort treatment for bacterial, fungal, and protozoal infections.

Applications:

Imipenem is an antibiotic that achieves efficacy against gram-positive bacteria. It was originally developed to treat bacterial infections by Enterobacteriaceae, but current formulations are restricted to third-generation cephalosporin use only.

The medicine's applications are broad enough to include surgical prophylaxis (preventive), short courses of treatment for skin and soft tissue infections, sepsis, intraabdominal surgery (antibiotic prophylaxis), complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI) and hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP).

Imipenem is a drug that fights bacteria by killing them. It can use it to treat urinary tract infections, pneumonia, and certain other lung diseases.  It can also keep you from getting or spreading some respiratory infections that often spread in the time after an operation. The most common use for imipenem is as intravenous (IV) treatment for bacterial pneumonia with respiratory secretions like sputum.

It may also use it to prevent bacterial enteric, specifically bloodstream infection (BSI). Because of its broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative organisms, imipenem is effective in treating acute episodes of UTI and preventing recurrence.
